What I Bring to a Perimenopause Appointment Now

Twelve minutes. That’s the average. Some appointments run longer, some shorter, but twelve minutes is the number I plan around. Twelve minutes to cover whatever I came in for plus anything that might complicate it.

I used to go in with a general sense of what was bothering me and leave with a general sense of having been heard. That was not sufficient. I’ve learned to treat a perimenopause appointment the way Nora Kincaid would treat a witness interview: prepare the questions in advance, know which ones matter most, and don’t let the conversation end before you’ve gotten what you came for.

Here’s what I bring now:

A written symptom summary. Not a list of every weird thing — a prioritized summary of the top three to five things affecting my daily function. Sleep disruption, cognitive symptoms, mood changes. Things I can describe with specifics: frequency, duration, what makes them better or worse.

My cycle log. Even if it’s irregular — especially if it’s irregular. Dates, duration, anything notable. Changes in pattern are data. Your doctor needs data.

My current medications and supplements. Written down. Not recited from memory at 9am in a paper gown.

My one non-negotiable question. Every appointment, I identify one thing I need answered before I leave. Not a list — one. Because if I have eight questions and we run out of time, I’ll leave with none of them really answered. One question, fully addressed, is worth more than eight half-answered.

This month’s: what do we do about the hip stiffness, and is it worth investigating before attributing it to hormonal changes?

This is not medical advice. It’s a prep system that works for me. Your provider, your conversation, your call.
